Robyn Germanese - "Morsus"

Fashion and costume designer Robyn Germanese was born August 8th 1981 in Toronto, Ontario.  Since a young age Robyn has been interested in exploring the decoration of the skin. World cultures, tribes, and ancient practice primarily inspire Robyn’s fascination with fashion.  She consistently collects images into mood boards, and binders to keep references for future collections.

Since graduating from College Lasalle in Montreal, Quebec in May 2010, Robyn has designed two small collections, in which pieces have been sold in Netherlands, United States, as well as Canada.

Her work has been described as monstrous, elegantly edgy, and aggressive tribal. She continues to pursue her dreams of the ever- changing world of fashion, in which she can depict all the strangeness and beauty she sees and imagines.

“Morsus”- bitten

The body is exaggerated, and exposed through the clothes becoming a part of the garment. Wounds are reveled in what is supposed to be armor (the clothing). That pain is inescapable no matter how stoic a person may seem.

Typically elegance is the pursuit of grace, glamor, and dignity but to “wear” one’s pain, rawness, and subcutaneous matter on the outside is the ultimate raw form and therefore suffering can be beautiful.

“Morsus” demonstrates two seemingly opposing states one being the victim with discomfort, and raw sores, while the other is elegantly masked and abundantly decorated she maybe safely armored from the world.

So much of society is based on perfection. Refining one’s image to the world is a priority to many, to obtain perfect teeth, perfect skin, shining hair, healthy and neat everything. We are a culture obsessed with hiding what is inside us be it our emotions, our pain, our scars, we are truly afraid to show what has the potential to make us stronger: our wounds.

Using soft, silky, frothy, transparent fabrics and draped, body conscious silhouettes Morsus exemplifies at once the confident elegant women. Through the use of fabric paint, hand made textile, and sculpture the subcutaneous layer is revealed.
